Background Shows for Working
A good background show is a specific and underrated thing. It can't demand your eyes, can't have a plot you'll lose, and can't be so gripping that you stop working — which rules out most genuinely great television.
The criteria that actually matter: episodic rather than serialised, so missing ten minutes costs you nothing; dialogue-driven, so you can follow it by ear alone; and already familiar helps enormously, which is why rewatches dominate this list.
What doesn't work, despite frequently being recommended: anything with subtitles, anything with a mystery, and anything you haven't seen. If you've never watched the show, you'll either watch it properly or miss it entirely — neither of which is the job.
The Office (US)
Series · 2005The archetype. Almost entirely dialogue, self-contained episodes, and most people have seen it enough that missing a scene costs nothing.
Where to stream →Parks and Recreation
Series · 2009Same shape as The Office with a warmer tone — better if you find cringe humour distracting rather than comforting.
Where to stream →The Great British Bake Off
Series · 2010Slow, predictable in structure, and pleasant to glance up at. The visual bits are the reward, not the plot, so looking away is free.
Where to stream →Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Series · 2013Joke-dense enough to be entertaining by ear and episodic enough to drop in anywhere. Twenty-two minutes fits neatly between tasks.
Where to stream →Bluey
Series · 2018An unconventional choice for a working adult, but seven-minute self-contained episodes and gentle audio make it genuinely low-demand.
